Her relationship with her brother is clearly abusive, and she tends to recoil from him, as well as be continually frightened by his temper. Their relationship is strange to outside readers; their family is well known for incestuous marriage and relationships, and Dany has grown up believing that she will likely one day marry her brother. Viserys bullies her often, and when the story opens for Dany, we learn that he’s also essentially selling her into slavery, giving her up to be a khal’s bride in order to gain himself an army so that he can win back the Iron Throne.

Her tameness and dependence on her brother is shown here, because she agrees with little more than a mentioning of how she does not want to marry Khal Drogo. He essentially threatens her, and she does what he wants, becoming a bride, khaleesi of Drogo’s khalasar, as well as losing her virginity at the tender age of thirteen years old.

But it is as khaleesi that Daenerys is able to blossom. While most khaleesi do not have much authority, Dany begins to see herself as a Queen, especially since exercising her voice and power seems to make Drogo approve of her even more. She gains some control in their bedroom as well; most Dothraki women are only taken from behind, but with the help of her handmaiden, she learns the ways of sex, and gets Khal Drogo to submit to her in bed. She grows strong and proud as khaleesi, much to the disdain and jealousy of her brother, who grows more and more angry with her and the khal for wasting his time.

By this point, Dany can see that not only is her brother no more than a bully, but he is no leader, and would make a terrible King even if he ever managed to regain the throne he believes is his. When he threatens her and her unborn child, growing in her belly, she does nothing to stop her husband as he kills her only remaining family by pouring a pot of molten gold over his head. Fire cannot kill a dragon, she says, as she realizes that he never was one. She does not even particularly mourn his passing, fully capable of going on without him. It is a testament to how much she grows as a person over that year, coming into her own and gaining a handle on her own self-worth.

It is this strength that ends up carrying her through the story to her current canon point. She suffers greatly after the death of both Drogo and their baby, but she manages to survive through her great wit, ability to win others with her words, and her loyal companions. She inspires loyalty in others, and those that love her know that she would make a good leader, because not only is she strong and determined, but she also has compassion that is not known to most conquerors. She has lived the life of a slave, essentially, and she would wish that kind of life on no one else.

And then there are her dragons, the creatures she stepped into the flames with, was sitting beside them in the fire as they hatched, fed them milk from her breasts that was meant for her son. They are her children, and there is little that she could care for more than them. They are a symbol of her magic and her rebirth as the last Targaryen dragon, and she loves them as if they were her own babies. In her mind, they essentially are. They are also her greatest weapon, though they need protecting for now because they are so young. As such, she is, obviously, very protective of them, for to lose them would be to lose literally everything. Her children, her life, and any chance she has at regaining the Iron Throne in the name of her family.

Because even though there are many things she disliked about her brother, Viserys, she grew up believing that the Iron Throne rightly belonged to him, and thus with his death, her. In his weakness, she believes it falls upon her shoulders to return their family to their rightful place as the ruler of Westeros, and she has made it her life’s mission to do so. However, she has proven that she will not sink to levels she believes beneath her in order to win. She knows that, even if she had all the money in the world, she cannot simply take over and have any hope to keep the Throne. She is an intelligent woman, even at her age, and knows that she has to learn to be a good and just ruler before she can ever hope to keep her title after she wins it.

She has already proven to have a good heart, however. Even as Khal Drogo’s wife, she stood against others in the khalasar to save the lives of women being repeatedly raped after battle and taking them under her wing. She has sacked cities, but has done so in order to free slaves and has always attempted as little bloodshed as possible. She realizes fully that blood will be spilt no matter what, but there is always a better way than simple massacre, especially of innocents.

Daenerys is all about balance. She has both strength and weakness, the ability to be calm and the temper of a dragon, and she can be both merciful and merciless. Her driving goal, however, is simply to return home and claim what is hers, all while remaining true to herself and her morals and beliefs.

While A Game of Thrones describes Daenerys’ change from timid child-bride to a proud young woman, Clash of Kings allows us to see her proving herself to those around her. She’s already begun to realize her own potential, especially after losing her brother and her family, and has instead gained her dragons and the remnant of the khalasar she once rode with. She finds herself trying to keep these remaining people together, mothering them and doing everything she could to help them all survive and proving to herself, those she leads, as well as those they run into that she is what she says she is; a mother of dragons, a khaleesi, a queen. She suffers greatly through the first sections of the novel, but refuses to give up on her and her people, despite the fact that their lost and starving, and she finally finds them shelter within Qarth. She suffers another betrayal in the city, when those that took her in prove to be plotting against her life and only wanting her for her dragons. After the first betrayal of Mirri Maz Duur, Dany quickly starts to realize that she truly can trust very few people around her, as too many think her a weak woman waiting to be used for her name and her dragons.

A Storm of Swords is when Daenerys truly shows the kind of woman she is capable of being. Despite the fact that the two closest to her, Ser Jorah and Ser Barristan (in disguise as Whitemane), urge her to make certain decisions, Dany follows her own way, leaving them out of her internal plots until she springs her traps. She successfully sacks cities using her wits alone, taking council from others, but proving to be perfectly capable of intelligent strategy. All the while, she continues to stand by her morals, freeing slaves as she goes, and sacrificing as few innocents as possible. She is crafty, cunning, and merciless in her conquering, using everything she has to her advantage. It proves incredibly foolish for the people she encounters not to take her very seriously or to think her weak and stupid, and it becomes clear to those around her that she takes after her older late brother, Rhaegar, far more than her father or Viserys.

However, Dany eventually suffers further betrayal, this time by those she thought she could trust. When Whitemane is proven to be Ser Barristan Selmy, a man that turned his back on the Targaryan mad king to serve Robert instead, Dany is incredibly hurt. Ser Jorah, however, is also found out to be a spy for Robert’s Spider, Varys, and has been giving reports of her actions to her since he began to serve her. This knowledge only adds to Dany’s belief that she can truly trust no one entirely, and she sends them on a mission during which they’re almost certain to die.

Only for them to come back. Barristan submits entirely to Daenerys’ will, and she pardons him. Jorah, on the other hand, remains stubborn, and she exiles him.

Dany’s feelings towards the two men vary greatly, despite the fact that both give her council and advice. Ser Jorah has been with her longer, arriving to serve Viserys first, and falling in love with her as they traveled. He became the first member of her Queensguard after she announced herself khaleesi of her khalasar and her dragons came into being. He’s made advances on her, all of which have been confusing and unwanted, and she chose to be intimate with her handmaiden, Irri, instead (though this arrangement also did not work out well). The further along in the story we go, the more Dany disagrees with him and refuses to let him influence her decisions, and the fact that he has been spying on her all this time is the final straw. Daenerys is a very forgiving person, but some things cannot be overlooked. When he doesn’t even have the sense to submit to her will, instead trying to forcibly change her mind about him with words, she exiles him.

Ser Barristan, on the other hand, provides her with things other than council. He is the one to finally tell her the truth about her family, about how her father was mad and why he was overthrown. About her brother, and why everyone seems to believe that he was the last dragon until Dany came into her own. It’s because of Barristan that she comes to realize that her view of the world is quite narrow, and that she needs to know more about the world she calls her home, and well as how to truly lead, before she can take the Iron Throne. It is partially his influence that leads to her decision to remain in Slaver’s Bay until she can bring true order there, instead of immediately heading for Westeros. Dany wants an advisor, not someone that thinks they can sway her decisions, and she thinks she can see that in Barristan, whereas Jorah does not seem to ever back down until he gets his way.

Still, both of their betrayals have hit her hard, and Dany knows that in the end, the only person she can truly rely on his herself. She also has her vision to worry about, and knows that betrayal is still at theme that will haunt her future.

Powers/Abilities:

Dany’s body can withstand much higher temperatures than your typical person without being burned. The best example of this was when she sat in the middle of a pyre and did not burn to death. Her hair and clothes burned away, but her skin did not. This is likely a trait that is usually carried by Targaryen’s, because when her brother died from molten gold, she claimed he was ‘not a true dragon.’

Appearance:

Dany is a short and very beautiful young woman, with gentle curves and extremely toned muscles, though she does carry the marks of a woman who has been pregnant, with light colored stretch marks (now barely visible) on her stomach and thighs. She has silver/white blonde hair and violet eyes and stands at about 5’3”.

Samples:

Actionspam Sample:

[It has taken Daenerys a great deal of time to figure out this strange magical device. It’s like nothing she has ever seen in her entire lifetime, and it’s likely that she’s been playing with it for close to a couple hours now. Still, the feed cuts in and out several times, her expression confused and somewhat concerned at the strange things flashing up at her from the screen.

Finally, her expression hardens into something more confident and strong, though there’s the slightest hint of doubt in her eyes. She feels somewhat silly, not sure if she’s doing this correctly, though she takes comfort in the fact that if she isn’t? No one will have heard her being foolish but herself.]

I cannot say that I am pleased by this turn of events.

[Her voice is stiff. She’s angry, underneath the worry and the confusion.]

Do not think that I will simply bend to your will. I am not yours to command.

[Said to whoever put this collar around her throat, if by chance they are listening. Her hand reaches up to the offensive object, her fingers closing around it.]

I am Daenerys Stormborn, of House Targaryen, the Unburnt, Mother of Dragons, and Queen of Meereen and the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros.

[Her fingers tighten around the collar as she glares into the device.]

And a dragon is not a slave.

Prose Sample:

Dany had been having such a nice dream, one that she’d had often. She was with her sun and stars, their son sitting between them, playing with the soft earth beneath his hands. But too soon, she could already feel the dream drifting away as sound from outside her private little world filtered into her consciousness, and she could feel herself frowning even within the dream as it fell away from her.

She could hear the sounds of waves crashing outside along with the scent of salt in the air, and for a moment she thought that perhaps she had been dreaming for a very long time, that she’d never sacked those cities, that the Unsullied did not yet serve her, and she was still on that boat, sailing across the sea.

But the bed beneath her did not move, and so she knew quickly that that was impossible. Instead, she finally opened her eyes, taking in the sight of the room around her, with its strange and plush furniture and the odd architecture.

Dany sat up fully in the bed, pulling the sheets around her as she felt suddenly exposed and vulnerable. There was no one here in the room, but she would have preferred the company of someone she knew in that moment. Perhaps she had been kidnapped, her dragons stolen, her people slaughtered. How could she know, from this strange room that she did not recognize?

Her hand dropped to tug the sheets closer as she lifted herself from the bed, not about to cower like a child where she sat, and moved to the open window, feeling the breeze against her face as she took in the view outside. It was beautiful, there was no doubt of that, but it was completely foreign, and she knew in that moment that something magical had happened. No normal kidnapping could have brought her here, and Daenerys was sure that there were greater powers at work. But if that power tried to ask her to bend the knee, they would be sorely disappointed.

comments

She has silver/white blonde hair and violet eyes. Having already been through puberty and reaching womanhood younger than your average teenager, Dany will not change much in appearance, except for to perhaps grow slightly taller, to about 5’3”.

» Suitability: Though technically underage in our modern society, in Dany’s world, girls are quite often married soon after their first menstruation (or flowering), around the age of 13. Dany herself was married at 13, and lost her virginity on her wedding night. She was pregnant within her first year of marriage, though the child was still born. She even taught her husband to be a more considerate lover by teaching him to let her take control from time to time.

She is not uncomfortable with sex in the slightest, and while she will be picky about her choice in partners, the sexual side of the island will not be particularly shocking for her. She owns the sexual side of herself, and will do what she needs to do to survive.

» Orientation: Bisexual – Daenerys has had sexual relations with both men and women in the series. She lost her virginity to her husband, Khal Drogo, and enjoys the company of other men after her canon point. After Drogo’s death, she also allows her handmaiden, Irri, to give her release, though she feels some shame about the act afterwards. It is likely that Dany has some bisexual tendencies, though she generally prefers men.

» Personality

When Daenerys is first introduced to the reader, she’s seen as a somewhat naïve, meek, fragile person.
